Myanmar areca nut is mainly exported to the Indian market. In 2018, the Indian government imposed a tariff of 40 percent on areca nut imports because the Indian government thought that Myanmar traders were bringing in cheaper Indonesian areca nuts into the Indian market. Due to this regulation, the prices of Myanmar nuts dropped and growers did not earn any profit in 2019. This also affects the production of areca nut in 2020.
