Watermelon production has slowed down in countries such as Spain, Morocco, and Tunisia due to the Covid19 outbreak and early harvest watermelons from Greece did not satisfy European customers in terms of taste. Furthermore, trade routes from Iran are also hindered.
All these developments led to an increase in demand from Europe to offseason watermelon from Turkey. Turkey has exported 3.7 kmt of watermelons in 2020 so far for an export value of 1.7 million USD which represents a 252% increase in export value over last year's numbers in the same period. The farmgate price is around 0.4 USD per kg.
