The coronavirus outbreak has significantly affected the anchovy producers in Nusa Tenggara Timur province, Indonesia, as the demand from China has been halted due to the outbreak. In normal conditions, anchovy producers in this region can export around 2 MT of dried anchovy every month. But now, with decreased demand from China and the Indonesian government's decision to temporarily ban exports, the anchovy exporters have been forced to only cater to the domestic market. From a financial perspective, selling their product domestically is not as lucrative as selling their product overseas. Moreover, these producers should also anticipate the possibility of a surplus of anchovy in their local markets because they are facing challenges even distributing their products to other provinces in Indonesia, following the closure of major ports such as Port Surabaya in East Java and Port Priok in Jakarta.
