In the span of April to May 2020, the national production output of maize in Indonesia was 4 MMT, a slight increase from 3.7 MMT in the same period last year. This production increase was seen as a solid achievement for the national maize industry that has been facing tough competition from imported corn from neighboring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. This current production output will now be distributed for the direct consumption by regular consumers, as well as various industries across the country. One particular industry that will be prioritized is the animal feed industry that requires an average of 1.5 MMT of corn kernel every month and had relied heavily on imported corn in the period of January to March 2020. By getting the corn kernel from local farmers, it is expected that the price of animal feed can be lowered down by as much as 30%.
