This year, the rabbit plague for Valencian farmers has been described as the worst on record. This is as lockdown restrictions, plague control measures were not implemented during the months of April, May, and June. However, growers lament that the problem has been unattended and report that this is a problem that has continuously gotten worse over time.
Rabbits tend to eat the base of lemon and orange trees, leaving them exposed and vulnerable to diseases and death by dryness. The region has declared a state of alarm and extended the permits for hunters in an attempt to control the situation. Suppliers are demanding government intervention and financial compensation for their losses, for which the government response is still pending.
