The illex argentinus, which had an excellent season in terms of catches, also had it in sales. The collection grew by 66.5% and the volume sold by 53.6% because, despite the abundance, the price grew by 8.4%. In total, 125K tons were sold for U$D 335.5M until July 31. Squid can be called the miracle in the middle of the pandemic that saved many companies.
China was the main buyer: with 65K tons the demand increased by 32.5% and in terms of U$D it allowed to collect 46% more since it was sold at a higher price than in 2019 (10%). In any case, it was one of the most remarkable market lows, standing at U$D 2,500/ton.
This year, South Korea surpassed Spain in purchases, although at a much lower price. In 2020, sales to this country grew 180% in volume and 183% in foreign currency, selling 15K tons for almost U$D 41M, with an average price of U$D 2,600.
The Spanish market also increased purchases but more moderately, demanding 39% more in volume; but while South Korea or China pay around U$D 2,600, in Spain, and after a price drop, U$D3,300 was paid. In total, 10K tons were sold for U$D 34M.
Japan bought 17% more and at a price 21% more expensive than last year. It received 3,8K tons and paid for them almost U$D 12M, which implies a 42% increase in the collection. Sales to Norway also increased by 22% in volume and 41% in the collection and even in Italy sales increased, growing by 66% in volume and 82% in dollars, thanks to the price increase of almost 10%.
