ASF (African Swine Fever) Poland: 25% of wild boar found dead in affected areas tested positive

An update on the surveillance of wild boars and pigs presented at the virtual meeting of the permanent group of African Swine Fever experts is as follows:

At the virtual meeting of the standing group of experts on African Swine Fever (SGE ASF16), participating member countries presented their national epidemiological situation in relation to ASF. The following is a summary of the report on the situation of the ASF in Poland from May 2020 to the end of October 2020.

Boar surveillance:
In areas of the country considered free until at least the beginning of the period, 2,144 wild boars were found dead and 34 were hunted. None of these animals had positive or seropositive PCR (8th May to 30th September 2020).
In the areas of the country considered affected and at risk (parts I, II and III) at the beginning of the period, 2,869 wild boars were found dead, 25% of which were PCR positive for ASF. Another 48,934 wild boar were hunted, with 0.25% positive by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) and 0.5% positive.

Monitoring of domestic pigs:
In areas of the country considered free until at least the beginning of the period (8 May to 28 October), 11 suspected cases were reported in commercial farms / yards and there were 2 confirmed outbreaks of ASF.

In the areas of the country considered affected or at risk (part I, II and III) at the beginning of the period, 162 suspected cases were registered in commercial farms / yards and there were 99 confirmed cases of ASF.

The distribution of 101 outbreaks in the period in domestic pigs per month is as follows: 3 in June; 16 in July; 56 in August; 21 in September; 5 in October.
