August Floods Cause a Drop in Mussel Production in New Zealand

Due to the severe flood in the South Island of New Zealand in August, mussel production has been affected. Because of the damage to crops and infrastructure, some mussel producers estimate a production drop of up to 60% in the first half of their new season. The high demand that New Zealand faces for green lip mussels will not be able to be fulfilled in the medium term due to crop damage.
