Australian beekeepers have lodged a legal challenge against attempts from New Zealand producers to trademark the term "manuka". New Zealand producers argue the word, the plant, and the honey that bees make it from is theirs only. The New Zealand Government has also provided $6 million in funding to secure rights in China. Manuka honey is produced from the nectar of Leptospermum plants, varieties of which are native to Australia and New Zealand.
