The Hass avocado market in Europe received large volumes during May and June, mostly from Peru, which caused the market to collapse with prices falling from EUR 2.50/kg to EUR 0.75/kg. However, from the first week of July stocks began to clear and arrivals started to decrease with market prices rising week after week.

By the end of week 26, some importers began to offer their fruit at close to EUR 7.00/4kg. Subsequently, prices increased to EUR 8.00/4kg during week 28 and EUR 8.50/4kg during 29. At the end of 30, prices were EUR 10.00/4kg for big sizes such as 12er and 14er; and EUR 11.00/4kg for smaller sizes (16er to 24er). Moreover, baby avocados, packed in 10kg boxes (26er/28er30er), were priced at EUR 2.50/kg.

This trend was confirmed during week 31, when prices did not dip below EUR 11.00/4kg for shipments from Kenya, even reaching levels higher than EUR 12.50/4kg, especially for sizes 20/22 and 24 from South Africa. In only 5 weeks, the price increased from EUR 7.00/4kg to EUR 12.50/4kg.

Despite the improved market conditions, avocado suppliers from Peru report that there are still sufficient fruit left to be harvested, especially larger sizes (10er to 14er) and that the oil content is high, as they hang on the tree for longer. Thus, Europe can again expect considerable volumes from Peru, but without the same intensity as observed during May and June. Moreover, Chilean exporters report numerous offers for small sizes, between sizes 18er and 24er, but only for week 44 and onwards.

Due to the above, it is possible that the European market will be stressed again for a few weeks with prices decreasing, especially in the bigger sizes, but it is not expected that the market will collapse like it did in May and June.
