Recently, one grower in the Philippines diverted the fresh pineapples for export with a price of FOB USD 9.80/12kg pack or USD 0.82/kg to the local market where the price is only within the range of USD 0.27-0.36/kg. The main reason for the shipment diversion was caused by High Shell color upon harvest. The market color requirement is only 0-1. It is due to the effect of bad timing in the 2nd round of de-greening of pineapples intended for harvest in W50. The weather was warm and sunny immediately after the 2nd pass of spraying. Another factor is the chemical solution mixture. If the dosage is still high in the 2nd round of spraying, the outcome will be difficult to control. Most of the time, the de-greening operations schedule is before daybreak. The crucial part is the constant monitoring of the weather condition in the Southern Mindanao region in the Philippines. Most of the time, the actual weather in the area is not close to the forecasted condition. In this situation, a 2x40 FCL diverted to the local market will have a loss amounting to around USD 15,344 (excluding the Operations loss).
