The banana is one of the most popular fruits in Europe, and Portugal recorded top 5 consumption per capita among European countries. The selling prices in supermarkets range from EUR 0.79 to 0.99 per kg (Vat 6% included) during marketing campaigns. The most common variety is Cavendish, caliber 22+, Category I, from Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, and Del Monte, Fyffes and Rainforest Alliance are well known brands.

Portugal also has suppliers with several maturations chambers. The biggest suppliers are located in MARL, the supply market in Lisbon. The bananas in 18kg boxes in vacuum arrived, and after the vacuum opened, they go to the maturation chamber for 4-5 days, depending on the color pantone agreed with the buyers ( color n4 or n5). The oxygen, humidity and ethylene oxide are controlled every day by a computer, but is the human control every day that makes the maturation perfect.
