The Bangladesh government attempts to persuade Russia to ease its prohibition on Bangladeshi potatoes being exported to Russia. The request was made at the Bangladesh-Russia intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific, and technological cooperation's third session, which took place virtually earlier in December 2021.

Bangladesh ranks sixth in the world in potato production, with almost 10 million MT produced in the previous fiscal year. The amount of potato demand that Bangladesh can handle is around 8 million MT. Potatoes are commonly exported from Bangladesh to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam, the Maldives, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, and Nigeria.
