Nigeria currently has approved for commercialization, two genetically modified crops, namely; Pod Borer Resistant (PBR) Cowpea, and Bt. Cotton. Since the approval of these crops for planting, Nigerian farmers have expressed optimism that these crops would be a game-changer in farming as it would increase yield, reduce losses caused by pests and improve export opportunities. The modified varieties are resistant to pests while on the farm and also has the potential to yield far higher than the conventional seeds.
