The Ugandan government through the Ministry of Agriculture and other development partners has procured a new ferry to operate between Buvuma Island and Uganda's mainland. The ferry, named MV Palm, comes as a great boost to oil palm farming on Buvuma island, which has set aside 10,000ha for new oil palm plantations. The ferry will operate between Kiyindi and Buvuma and has a carrying capacity of 519 passengers and 25 vehicles. The palm oil project is aimed at reducing the heavy reliance on the importation of crude palm oil, mainly from Malaysia and other Asian countries.
