A recent ban imposed on Spanish plums by the Brazilian government has completely knocked down this year's campaign. The ban came into effect on June 1 and is aimed at preventing the entrance of the Lobesia botrana which is affecting the Spanish plum fields.
Whilst the Spanish government appealed this ban, they did not receive a response until it was too late, which had a major impact on export volumes and prices. Brazil represents more than 20% of the total export volume of Spanish plums, and thus relocating this excess supply was a big challenge for suppliers, who in their attempt to redistribute the supply, ended up overflowing both the domestic and international markets.
