Currently, Bulgaria imports around 75-80% of the total consumed pork meat from other European countries such as Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, but mainly from Germany.
The African Swine Fever breakout in the country has obliged the farmers to get rid of their animals which led to a significant reduction in the domestic supply. Before the swine fever, domestic production was capable of meeting the demand around 30% while after the fever outbreak the same percentage is at about 20-25%.
