Ahead of the New Year(2023), prices in the Canadian red lentil market showed slight decreases. As of December 2022, producer participation in the market has improved compared to 2021. By the first half of December 2021, farmers had sold 35% of their supply. By the same date in 2022, farmers forecasted to have sold 45% of their produce. While farmers’ market participation has improved, exports are slightly behind in the first post-harvest quarter compared to last year due to the lack of demand from major buyer countries. The pace of India’s market participation, one of the most important buyers driving the market, continues to affect Canadian lentil prices. India imported 600K tons in the first ten months of 2021, and about 500K tons in the same period of 2022. However, demand is forecasted to have a slight increase in January 2023.
