The surge in COVID19 cases in Thailand has wreaked havoc on the poultry supply chain, driving up overall prices with sharp increases seen in specialized products like Chicken BLK, a form of chicken meat processing that is suitable for making yakitori.
Orders are currently backlogged until at least September 2021 for the highest bidders and some suppliers require customers to bid for spare capacity - either by way of price or volume commitment or both.
The shortfall in production is because the spike in local COVID cases that have led to factories enforcing work-from-home and/or social distancing policies.
Most poultry processing factories employ foreign laborers from Cambodia and Myanmar who normally live in close quarters, increasing to risk of COVID19 clusters.
