Stable Volumes and Income for Chilean Salmon and Trout Exports in Q1 2023

Chilean salmon and trout exports have maintained stable volumes and income, as reported by the Chilean National Customs Service. From January to May 2023, a total of 316,614 tons of salmon and trout were exported, with a value of USD 2,798 million. This represents a slight decrease of 1% in volume compared to the same period in 2022 when 319,276 tons were shipped. However, there was a 1.1% increase in returns.

Several markets have shown positive trends in salmon and trout exports. Mexico witnessed a significant growth of 24% in volume and 33% in returns for the period of January to May 2023, with 9,285 tons exported for USD 104.4 million. China, as the fifth strategic market, experienced substantial increases of 73% in volume and 76% in returns, receiving 14,454 tons valued at USD 105.5 million. Russia also saw a remarkable surge, with a 94% increase in shipments and a 116% rise in returns, exporting 16,781 tons for USD 122.7 million.

In contrast, Brazil, the most significant Latin American market, showed a minor decrease of 1% in returns but a 1% increase in volume. For Japan, there was a notable decline of 26% in volume and 21% in returns, with 52,014 tons shipped for USD 400.3 million compared to 70,527 tons in the same period of 2022. The United States remained the leading market for Chilean salmon, with 107,098 tons exported for USD 972.1 million, indicating a marginal drop of 0.3% in volume and a 1% increase in value.

Overall, the Chilean salmon and trout industry has demonstrated resilience in maintaining stable export volumes and income, with positive growth observed in several key markets.
