Fish consumption among Italians saw a tremendous increase during Easter while fish was preferred over meat and poultry, mainly due to Italian beliefs and traditions. Among Italians, the most consumed products were mollusks - mussels and claims, cephalopods - mainly octopus, sea bass, sea bream, and salmon.
While 76% of buyers' choice was fresh fish, Covid-19 and higher fuel costs have increased fresh fish prices. From week 14 to 17, the prices increased by 28% compared to 2021. As for fresh fish, there is a tendency toward farmed fish, which is in line with the FAO declaration of 2022.
Thus, to meet most of its domestic demand, the country largely relies on imports.
Italy is the seventh-largest market for imported fish and seafood globally and the third-largest among European Union (EU) countries, behind Spain and France.
