W34 will see the first arrival of South African fresh oranges in Europe which comply entirely with the new cold treatment regulations at origin and during the sea voyage. These oranges can be marketed without restrictions, bringing larger volumes and more dynamism back to the market. The European citrus market experienced difficult conditions with lower volumes since the start of July due to the large number of South African origin containers blocked by Dutch authorities once discharged from the vessels at the port of Rotterdam. Until the end of W33 prices for oranges remained high, being offered for around USD 17-18/15kg box (cat 1 Valencia oranges).

From W34 there will be more oranges available in the European market which is likely to put downward pressure on prices. However, the quality of the South African oranges needs to be taken into consideration, because the fruit was exposed to extended periods of low temperatures, so there’s uncertainty about what the condition of the fruit will be on arrival. According to a Dutch importer, the orange market could experience an initial dip in prices with the new arrival of South African oranges. However, the market outlook remains positive and stable. South Africa has shipped 2 million fewer boxes of oranges to Europe in 2022 compared to 2021. This lower volume should ensure a stable market until the end of the season.
