Russia may increase the cultivated area of chickpeas because of a good realization in prices in 2021. Many farmers think that the Russian government may impose export taxes on major crops such as wheat and corn. However, there isn’t big local consumption of chickpeas in Russia, so the government may not change taxes or block the export. It has been a big fluctuation in the Rubble against the USD in the past few days and it caused high price expectations from farmers. Due to sanctions, very limited companies could export, so far till April 2022, Russia exported 215,000 MT. Russia contributes 20-25% of global chickpeas trade, with economic sanctions exports will be more difficult in regular volumes.
