The Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA) proactively engages in efforts to enhance its presence in Japan's food market. The Agriculture Secretary is negotiating to secure reduced banana tariffs and revitalize mango exports. These plans were discussed with Japanese officials and business representatives at the ASEAN-Japan Summit on Dec-23.

Given its proximity to Japan, the Philippines is well-positioned to supply low-cost bananas and other tropical fruits that adhere to Japanese quality standards. However, the country faces stiff competition from nations such as Cambodia, Laos, Mexico, and Vietnam, which benefit from zero or preferential tariffs in the Japanese market. The Philippines' strategic initiatives aim to overcome these challenges and strengthen its foothold in Japan's food industry.
