Despite the development of the new integrated sugar production estate in Sumatra, data released by the Ministry of Agriculture of Indonesia has shown concerning statistics regarding the availability of sugarcane plantation land in Indonesia. It is released that the total plantation area in Indonesia has experienced a major decrease since its peak in 2015. Since then the plantation area has gone from 445 KHa in 2015, to roughly 416 KHa in 2019 and around 411 KHa this year. This presents a challenge for the fulfillment of national demand that has now reached 5.4 MMT/year, which greatly exceeds the national production capacity of 2.2 MMT/year.
