Despite high demand in domestic and international markets, no Bangladeshi enterprise produces considerable quantities of processed fish. As a result, even though fish supply exceeds demand, only shrimp is processed for export. A few food enterprises create four to five things in highly tiny quantities, such as fish fingers, fish balls, crispy shrimp, and shrimp spring roll. Apart from that, the nation exclusively processes dried fish. But, according to local research, there is considerable scope for expanding business in local and international markets by processing different types of fish. According to figures from the livestock and fisheries ministry and the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters, the nation earned nearly USD 477 million in fiscal 2020-21 by exporting 77,000 MT of processed shrimp and marine fish, according to figures from the livestock and fisheries ministry and the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters (BFFEA).
According to the Bangladesh Frozen Foods Exporters Association, the European Union has licensed 77 export-dependent fish processing factories. The businesses treat shrimp and certain marine species before altogether exporting them. Frozen shrimp and prawns, frozen fish, fresh and chilled fish, frozen fish fillets and steaks, shark shells, skates and rays, shark fins and fish maws, salted and dehydrated fish, and dried fish are among the items available.
