Beekeepers are expecting a very bad year with honey yield as low as 70% compared to last year. One of the reasons for the low yield is the cold spring which didn't allow most of the flowers to give nectars.

Another major reason is the type of sunflowers that were sown have been selected from varieties that endure dry weather conditions and the bees weren't able to suck any nectar from sunflowers.

Bulgaria normally exports around 15 KMT of honey while imports around 5,000 tons mainly from Ukraine and China.

Retail prices are expected to be impacted by the lower yields while the wholesale prices are expected to maintain a rather stable level supported by imports from Ukraine which are free from import duties.
