Most of the tuna for export in the Philippines come from General Santos City. Thus, more and more businesses source their products there. Different varieties are also available, and the one in demand is the yellowfin tuna and the skipjack tuna. Yellowfin for EU market as they prefer firm tuna for their dishes, and Skipjack tuna for USA as they prefer lean meat that is not as firm as yellowfin. Currently, the Philippines is exporting to both EU and USA, however due to covid-19 effects on businesses and transport, there is lack of supply to cater to all the demands. Furthermore, General Santos City suppliers are struggling in meeting the demands both locally and internationally because of lack of manpower and equipment for export of fresh or frozen tuna. This might go on til early next year if Philippine government would not be able to handle the increase of confirmed cases.
