Kupang regency in the East Nusa Tenggara province has emerged as the new major producing-region of salt in Indonesia following the opening of new plantation land that was opened along the coastline on the northern coast of this region earlier this year. This region has a production capacity of 100MT/hectare, with around 75 hectares of land that is expected to be expanded in the following year. Moreover, the hotter climate and temperature in this region also enables the local salt farmer to harvest their product faster at around 30-40 days, in comparison to other provinces in Indonesia where it usually takes 45-60 days to be able to harvest the salt. The emergence of this region as a production region is viewed by the central government as a good momentum to minimize the dependence by the national food industry to imported salt in the near future.
