The strong demand for GM-free soybeans and meal in Europe provides the stability and high prices for GM-free producers around the globe since Europe is the largest consumption market of GM-free soybeans in the world.
The demand for this kind of oilseed and meal significantly increased in the past years for livestock feed because consumers are willing to get GM-free products such as meat, eggs and milk. In Germany, where the widest use of such product for livestock can be observed, the prices of GM-free soybean meal were almost 90 EUR/t higher in comparison with GM soy products: for November delivery the prices of GM-free soybean meal is 445 EUR/t, whilst GM soybean meal is 357 EUR/t only.
Although GM-free soybeans is estimated to account for 18% of the global soybean harvest, only 2% of the total is certified. In Brazil - the global leader in soybean production - GM-free accounts for just 4% of the harvest. Even though, the top producers of GM-free still come outside Europe.
China (14.2 mln tonnes), Brazil (13.7 mln tonnes), India (10 mln tonnes), the USA (7.2 mln tonnes), Russia (3.7 mln tonnes) and Canada (2.9 mln tonnes), are the main producers of GM-free soy in the world, and also the main exporters of the oilseed to the EU countries.
According to the Donau Soja Association data, the demand for the products is well above the supply, therefore the European countries have to increase the imports of GM-free soybeans.
