The Ethiopian main rainy season traditionally runs from June to August with a subsequent reduction in the volume of rainfall observed in September. However, as of W40 there is still extended heavy rain which is causing fall or bending of teff plants in the central part of Ethiopia, the main supply area of teff grains to the country. Bent or fallen teff plants will ruin the grain quality due to soil contact. By this time, teff grains are maturing on the farm, as the harvest will commence around mid-November. So, there are concerns among farmers that extended rain will negatively affect teff yield. Teff (Eragrostis tef) is the main source of stable food in Ethiopia and Eritrea and a significant reduction in yield could result in food security risks.
