The price of farmed yellowtail is getting higher. The main reasons are the rising cost of feed and lower juvenile fish catch than 2021. For example, in the southern area of Japan, the 2nd largest domestic supplier prefecture decreased its juvenile fish catch to 40% of the expected amount. Retailers are dealing with this trend by raising the price or buying alternative fish. Natural caught yellowtail, red sea bream, and other kinds of blue-backed fish tend to be chosen as alternatives. Demand for yellowtail is high from summer to autumn in Japan. Some buyers assume the price could be even higher at that time.
