Earlier this week the local representative of the Ministry of Agriculture of Karimun regency in Riau province, Indonesia has completed the export of around 25 MT of fresh pineapple to Singapore. This export is the first time export by the farmers from this region to Singapore, as a response to the considerably high demand for this commodity from the buyers in Singapore. The farmers are now targeting other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, considering that the shipment to Malaysia from Karimun can be done in less than 2 hours by sea. Karimun Regency itself has a high export potential as there is a total of 130 hectares of plantation lands with a production output of around 30 MT during the peak harvest season and 10 MT on regular months.
