Preliminary data, sent by 18 of the 23 states participating in the process, indicate coverage of 97.81% of the cattle and buffalo herd, in the first stage of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease.

There was a reduction in the percentage of vaccinated animals compared to last year. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the slight reduction was expected, as an impact of the logistical difficulties brought by COVID.

The states of Paraná, Acre and Rondônia, and regions of southern Amazonas and northwestern Mato Grosso had the last vaccination against the disease in 2019 and, at the moment, they are meeting the deadline for the recognition of a zone free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination by World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Rio Grande do Sul, which carried out its last vaccination in March this year, is also meeting the deadline for international recognition of a zone free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination. Since 2007, the state of Santa Catarina has been internationally recognized as free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination.

The second stage of the vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease begins in November.
