The forecast for French beef production in 2022 is 1.406 million MT of carcass equivalent which means a decrease of 1.4% compared to 2021. The decapitalization of the suckler cow herd accelerated in 2021. The rate of decapitalization increased from -1.4% at the end of 2020 to -2.8% at the end of 2021, freeing more females for slaughter. The forecast for veal calf production is the same. Production is weakened by two years of crisis -2020 and 2021- and by the very sharp increase in feed costs in 2021. Thus, slaughtering should start to decline in 2022, returning to the trend observed over the long term.
