The national production keeps swinging between 200,000 and 400,000 MT per year, while domestic demand is at least 1,000,000 MT. Around 600,000 MT of the deficit is covered by imports of packaged frozen potatoes. Besides rising production input costs (fungicides), one of the major challenges faced by the industry is the scarcity of quality seeds that can guarantee better yields.
For this season, the government also stopped providing farmers with quality seeds. This will impact production volume and will continue to import huge quantities to fill the demand gap.
On the other hand, frozen potato suppliers could start planning on how best they can grasp an acceptable share in the market.
