Garlic producers in Bangladesh's northern districts are unhappy because the price of garlic has dropped at wholesale and retail levels due to a supply excess during the peak harvesting season. This is a double whammy for many growers, who also lost money last year despite obtaining better prices for their crops. According to local farmers and authorities from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Rangpur and Dinajpur, the garlic harvesting season started a few weeks ago. This year, garlic will be planted on at least 9,039 hectares of land in eight Rangpur districts, with a production target of 92,198 tons. With the garlic harvesting season well underway, weekly wholesale marketplaces in Dinajpur's Khansama countries, such as those in Kachiniya and Pakethat, have picked up steam. Local farmers, on the other hand, are not seeing the price of garlic as high as they had hoped.
