Garlic producers in Kastamonu, Turkey, a region that supplies almost 25% of domestic consumption, are having a good harvest yield this year and expect that the domestic production will be sufficient to meet the demand. Last year the farmers had one of the worst harvest impacted by unfavorable harsh weather conditions and garlic prices further spiked with the COVID - 19 outbreak, too. Garlic prices went up to US$16/ kg during the peak period of the pandemic and currently, depending on the type and quality prices vary between US$1.35-US$4/ kg, and producers are hoping that the government will introduce higher import tariffs on imported garlic especially from China and Iran, in order to protect the domestic production.
