High Price of Imported Mexican Winter Squash in Japan in W5

In W5, the price of imported winter squash in the Tokyo market stood at USD 2.56-2.72/kg, which is a very high price compared with the price in 2022 of USD 1.17-1.22/kg. The main supply that comes from Mexico was reduced by the depreciation of the Japanese Yen. Winter squash imports decreased by 30% in W5 in the Tokyo market compared to 2022. While in W6, it started with 40% YoY less supply. The main supply normally shifts from Mexico to New Zealand in February. But winter squash from New Zealand suffered heavy rain at the end of January, so the market in Tokyo is not expecting enough supplies from New Zealand to lower the price immediately.
