A sharp rise in the price of animal feed created a severe price crisis in the Greek dairy and meat industries. These industries, which are already hit by rising logistics costs, are struggling as profits are not enough to offset rising labor costs or a sustainable industry expansion. Dairy product prices are rallying, but goat and sheep milk prices paid to producers are lower than expected. The meat industry is eager to exploit the economic hazards and purchase the flocks at low prices. As a result, shepherds, particularly those in mountainous areas, must choose between declaring bankruptcy and reducing their flock size or suspending operations to avoid production costs. Sheep and goat butter is the first dairy products to be affected and are already in short supply.
