Annually Kenya produces 2500 tons of tuna, which is less than 1% of what other nations with costs on the Indian ocean produce. In the past year, Kenya had earned 500 million Shillings by licensing foreign vessels to fish Tuna. This despite studies by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries report stating the country can produce 150,000 to 300,000 tons of tuna, worth between 21-42 billion Shillings. Kenya's fisheries' current state is due to weak law enforcement laws, lack of proper fishing control, and outdated legal frameworks, among other insufficiencies such as lack of modern equipment and failures to set up proper fishery processing plants and post-harvest storage systems.
