In 2022, Pacific Saury Catches in Japan Hit Record Low for Four Consecutive Years

The amount of saury caught in Japan in 2022 was 17.91K tons, down 2% from 2021, marking the lowest volume in four years. Catches of the fishing season in October were 11K T (17% rise YoY), 6,851T in November 2022 (down 19% YoY), and 41T in December 2022 (down 90% YoY), as the fishing season progressed, they were hit by a serious slump in catches. The amount of saury landed peaked at 343K T in 2008. From 1981 to 2014, there were good and bad catches at around 200K T, but since 2015, the catch has fallen below 100K T, and the last four years have been historically poor, falling below 20K T.
