Italians are big buyers of canned fish, especially canned tuna, whose per capita consumption amounts to 2.7kg per year, while exports reached a total value of USD 210.28M. Unfortunately, due to the recent rise in production costs, including raw materials, energy, and transportation, the final price of canned fish has increased by approximately 40% in 2022. The tinplate can, the primary packaging required for canned fish, accounts for approximately 25% of production costs given that the entire industry in Italy uses more than 680M cans per year for a total of 16,000MTk of tinplate. Moreover, olive oil is another important ingredient for canned tuna, whose prices have increased due to adverse weather conditions.
