Indonesian Salt Consumption

PT Garam is an Indonesian State Own Enterprise a subsidiry of ID Food that produce Salt. PT Garam revealed that Indonesia has reached self-efficiency for covering the needs of Salt Consumption. This can be seen from the need for salt for national consumption which does not exceed the annual salt production of PT Garam. Indonesia need around 500.000 tonnes per year to cover consumption of 270 million people. In 2021, PT Garam produces 1.092.000 tonnes, so a big surplus in production compared to consumption. However, Indonesia still needs to import industrial salt. This is because the production of industrial salt is still a big challenge for local salt producers, because the selling price is much more expensive than imported industrial salt.
