A new decree from MASAF (Ministry of Agricultural, Food, and Forestry Policies) was issued to regulate bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) fishing in Italy for the current year. The coastal fishing sector has seen an increase in vessel numbers from 118 units in 2023 to 148 this year. Authorized vessels can now catch up to 2.5 metric tons (mt) of bluefin tuna each year. For 2025, a new quota of approximately 40 mt is expected for all vessels. This quota will serve as a premium reserve, with a percentage quota of up to 15 mt for holders of individual capture quotas who demonstrate by Oct-24 their engagement in a supply chain commercial agreement covering all stages from extraction to marketing and distribution.
