Although climate change imbalances in Italy partially reduced the production of fruits and vegetables, it boosted the harvest of Porcini mushrooms. The overall 2022 campaign's production has risen by 30%, despite differences between the Italian regions. There has been a boom in the production of Porcini in the Dolomites, followed by Lombardy and Campania, while extreme heat followed by a downpour in Sicily and Tuscany has not yet provided the ideal conditions for the widespread birth of Porcini and other mushroom varieties. In W42, the wholesale price for Italian Porcini goes up to USD 21.00/kg, while it is halved for Porcini of Romanian origins, at USD 11.00/kg. Given that international demand exceeded Italian supply in 2021, this industry is significant for Italian customs not only because of the value-added products it produces but also because of the part it plays in Italian gastronomy and ecotourism.
