The apple imports in Japan remained low until 2018 as the domestic production was sufficient to meet the local demand. However, apple imports from New Zealand have increased sharply, accounting for 90% of the total import volume, for the following reasons:
1. Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) trade agreement was implemented, reducing tariffs on New Zealand apples by as much as 17%
2. Increase in apple demand which led to an increase in apple imports (domestic supply was not enough to meet domestic demands)

During the apple harvest in Japan which is from September to April, import volumes remain low. However, the volume of apple imports increases from May to August. The demand for apples from New Zealand is expected to remain high.
