Kenya recorded a decline in sugar imports of more than 50% from January to October in 2022. According to import data released by the Sugar Directorate, traders only imported 48% of the total 180,000MT quota allocated to Kenya by COMESA citing a shortage of sugar in the market. From January to October 2022, Kenyan traders imported 96,730MT compared to 201,555MT during the same period last year. Processors in the country spend USD 900 to process 1MT of sugar, USD 300 higher compared to other COMESA countries. The sugar shortage has seen prices increase from USD 1.90/2kg (Ksh. 230) in June to as high as USD 2.58/2kg (Ksh. 312) in November.
