The European market has received approximately 22% fewer mandarins in 2022 compared to the previous season. This has led to high prices in European markets rarely seen before. According to a Dutch importer, despite these prices, "demand remains strong because buyers want to accumulate enough stock to allow them to overlap the overseas mandarins with the first Spanish mandarins. And considering that no one wants to have a disruption in deliveries with their end customers (supermarkets), they are willing to pay the prices we ask for”.

On the other hand, French importers report that although the South African mandarin commands a high price, sufficient volumes of the favoured Orri mandarin variety from South Africa is not available in the French market. Resultantly, French importers have opted to import from Peru, since this origin has a greater volume of the Orri variety. Due to the popularity of the Orri variety, the prices of the Tango or Nadorcott varieties have not increased as explosively as in Northern Europe, but the Orri mandarin continues to demand a high price.

The prices observed both in Northern Europe and in France have been around USD 19.30/10kg box, with some smaller sizes around 18.33/10kg box The Orri mandarin is sold at approximately USD 21.23/10kg box on the French market. These prices should provide a good starting point for mandarins of Mediterranean origin.
