WK 7 was a quiet week for global chickpea markets due to higher production forecasts from India. The increase in production in India in the last five years has led to a decrease in imports. Total production is not reported separately as Desi and Kabuli, but most production is desi type for the country’s domestic market. According to the official data of the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, chickpea production is projected to be 13.12 million MT this year. Last year, the total production was 11.91 million MT and the average of the last five years was 10.74 million MT. Normally, if the amount of Kabuli chickpeas grown increases significantly, export volumes should also increase, but this is not happening because local consumption is also increasing. The high production volumes expected this year may leave the minimum support prices down and reduce the interest in chickpea production. It is possible to see a decrease in chickpea planted areas and production in the 2023 season, which will be an opportunity for exporters.
